Vacuum encased paperweights are sculptural objects that come from both the tradition of "off-hand" sculpting (as done by glassblowers), and lampworked sculpture. I design each weight individually, choosing flowers and creatures based on my mood, the season, or whatever interesting new flower I have come across in one of the many reference books I keep in the studio for inspiration.
These are a few of the designs I have made in the past. Each design is one of a kind, I make variations on designs I have done in the past, but I never make the exact same piece a second time.
3.5" Dia. An azure poison dart frog sits among clusters of pink berries and yellow tropical flowers.
3.25" Dia. A tiger metalmark butterfly lights on a draping cluster of spider flowers and a cluster of berries.
3.5" Dia. Two sprays of red Vanda orchids grow on a gnarled branch.
3.5" Dia. A spray of purple vanda orchids open off of a gracefully curved stem with curling leaves and delicate roots.
3.25" Dia. A circular bouquet of dried milkweed pods, leaves, and orange and white flowers.
3.25" Dia. A spray of spotted orchids cultivated on cut bamboo.
